Ask your doctor for a ferritin test!  If your doctor is reluctant to give your daughter this test, order a test online for only $29.  You can order the test from  There is a testing lab right here in Naperville.  Results are usually posted within 24 hours.  Use the article above to determine where your daughter's numbers are.  If they are not above 40, you can manage your diet or talk to your doctor.

Sleep-Athletes should make it a goal to get 8 hours of sleep or more every night.

Nutrition-A balanced diet is key to feeling good during training and racing.  Your daughter should drink water, eat a lot of fruits, vegetables, and nuts, and avoid junk foods.  Foods with Calcium and Vitamin D should also be carefully included in a runner's diet.

Shoes-Please replace your shoes every 300-500 miles.  This usually translates to one pair for summer training and another pair for the season.  If an athlete competes in both cross country and track, they will need 3 or 4 pairs per year.
