Naperville Central High School is the home of the Redhawks. The Girls Track & Field and Cross Country team competes in the Illinois High School Association's (IHSA) class 3A division for state competition. Central is one of nine schools in the competitive DuPage Valley Conference, one Illinois' elite athletic conferences.
The track and cross country programs have produced several state medalists and top team finishes at the state meets. Two Redhawks have been individual state champions.
Casey Short was an individual state champion in three events at the track and field state meets. Short was crowned state champion in the 800 meters in 2006. She won two state titles in 2007 when she won both the 800 meter run and 400 meter dash. At the time, she was the first female individual to successfully complete the 800/400 double victory in the state's history.
Amanda Fox was another individual state champion for the Redhawks. In 2011, she won the 3A individual state title in cross country. Her winning time was the second fastest time ever recorded by a girl on Detweiller Park's 3-mile course in Peoria.
The cross country team had its best team finish in 1987. The team won its first trophy in girls cross country that year. That season, the team earned a 3rd place trophy at the state meet.
